Total Traffic Awareness

March 13, 2009

tta If you haven’t used CoolIris before, I suggest you check it out. It’s a really, REALLY cool way of visualizing images in Firefox.

Now here in the Twin Cities, we have a network of traffic cams that MNDot maintains to watch our roads. Which is also cool. Although it’s a bit Orweillian, the cams are too small to really see much of anything, other than oh-look-that-car-is-on-fire.

I found that I could combine the two into TOTAL TRAFFIC AWARENESS. Wow. I am Big Brother.

WoW + J-Pop = Machinima

March 4, 2009

As you might have guessed, I’m a WoW player, and for better or for worse, I find it kind of awesome that someone was able to use Blizzard’s meshes and skins to do fully original animation. Check it out, and watch in High Def.

The catchy J-pop song is “Hide & Seek” by Namie Amuro. Enjoy!

Quest for the Holy WTF?

March 4, 2009

Gatorade. Wow.

As crassly commercial as this is, I was charmed by how well they followed, and even expanded upon the Monty Python formulae of Wacky Madcap Humor.  I liked how they were not in lockstep with the original Grail plot, it allowed some surprises to come through. The locations, cinematography, music and use of even some modernized Gilliamanimations are spot on. This only really falls down in the dialogue. Everyone is speaking as if they have gravel in their collective mouth. Python’s spoken humor has always been greatly dependant upon clever wordplay, and that gets lost to certain extent. saying that, I accept that Kevin Garnett (who I now see in a new light), is not an actor, not a linereader. Although kudos on the “dumping the ego” scene. It was kind of touching.

If you build it, they will come…

…and buy metric crap tons of stuff to resell to you that you never knew you would ever need. This is Ax-Man, the coolest ever store that has ever existed…ever.  And they just built one 2 minutes away from my house.   Remember, buy 12, and the 13th is free!

Someone HAS Been Paying Attention to the Webterblogs

August 8, 2008

With the advent of the internet and the web, we have all lost something valuable. The Librarian. Not only is this social position one of respect, and possible hotness, but also one of context. In a way all of use are like librarians now, constantly awash in a sea of information, important and unimportant. But, a librarian is paid to have vast general knowledge to serve their customers and to be able to find materials they don’t know of off-hand. Obviously, Yahoo, and then google, and maybe Cuil have killed that role. But the overarching general knowledge is something I think few of us work at like a job. There are real Librarians for the general internet. Sure, dmoz.org makes a go at it, but it’s very Web 1.0 and clunky, ad web directories, by default, are. Searching by crawled keyword (Google, I’m looking at you) has left us with a curious set of skills. We are better than ever at coming up with phrases that may lead us to what we want, but based on text, not on knowledge. Will this lead to a contraction of language. Maybe, if English isn’t already in death throes due to insufficient spelling and grammar checkers. Of course, then, there are those lolcats I’m so fond of.

Rocketing back to getting to the point: I have always wanted a list of when internet memes first showed up, since I’m not an internet Librarian. They made one at dipity.com. Booyah!

Cutting Edge Science, I Think

July 26, 2008

I know I want one!

Why do I never think of these things?

July 23, 2008

Back in the 90’s, I wanted my own T-shirt company. That never happened. Maybe because I didn’t think of ideas like the above. It’s unfair, I tell you.

Massive Keyboard Power with Spark

June 12, 2008

As a player of WoW, and a Mac user, I found the Apple Aluminum Keyboard (which I otherwise LOVE to DEATH) a bit troublesome. In WoW, fkeys are prebound to control a set of functions that are very often accessed, but which – on the Aluminum Keyboard- are mapped to other functions (iTunes and Exposé, notably). I could turn on the “Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys” option in the Sys Prefs (Funny story on that, below), but then I couldn’t rock out to Icky Thump as I’m Pwning N00bz, without troublesome window switching.
